Type 2 Diabetes - Caring for a Sick Diabetic

By
Having Type 2 diabetes presents its own set of daily challenges to be dealt with. But what makes life more difficult is when a diabetic becomes ill... diabetes complicates your care. Now your body, which is already jeopardized by Type 2 diabetes, is being further compromised.

One common occurrence is that a diabetic will postpones treatment. This is one of the worst things you can do. Since your body is already having to deal with one health issue, it makes it much easier for a further illness to creep in and create havoc in several areas of your body. Putting off medical treatment for an illness when you already have one problem, is not only discouraged but it can be very dangerous.

As a Type 2 diabetic you can not only experience severe ramifications to your health, but it could easily end up being life-threatening. An infection may increase the level of insulin resistance so the medications you are taking are not adequate. Or the infection may bring about nausea and vomiting so no food or drink can stay down; then if you are taking insulin you may find yourself with low blood sugar

There are some specific steps to take when you are sick:

1. Remain well hydrated. Allowing your fluid intake to drop not only brings on dehydration, but it dramatically impacts your blood sugar also. It puts an unnecessary strain on many areas of your body which are already working to fight off the illness.

Always drink more clear liquids when you are sick.

2. Monitor your system. There are many illnesses that are accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting. These can deplete your body quickly, compromising your immune system and placing your body under more stress.

Even profuse sweating, like that which accompanies a fever, can drain your body of much-needed fluids.

3. Maintaining your appetite. While you might not necessarily feel like eating a balanced diet when you don't feel well, you still have to keep up with taking in the appropriate amount of the right foods at the correct intervals... including snacks.

4. Watch medications. There is a good chance your doctor will have prescribed some type of medication to combat your illness. Despite what the manufacturer suggests or the usage warnings issued by the pharmaceutical industry, people still react differently to medications. You cannot simply rely on statistics to determine if you will, or will not, have a reaction to some medications until you take them.

Keep a close eye out for any change in your behavior and your body when taking a new drug. If you notice even the slightest change, notify your doctor immediately.

5. Check blood sugar more often. Since your body is not in its normal state of health, you need to compensate by checking your blood sugar more often. It doesn't take much to bring your blood sugar down when you don't feel good and your illness could easily mask the onset of hypoglycemia.

Type 2 diabetes is no longer a condition you must just live with. It need not slowly and inevitably get worse. Maybe this is the right time for you to take control... and take back your life.
